Mitochondria and Cellular Fatigue

When Tiredness and Fatigue, which is sometimes accompanied by exhaustion, goes on for weeks or months it usually involves our Mitochondria.

 

These are the Energy producing factories of our cells and some cells have several thousand in each cell usually closely packed together. They produce 90% of the bodies Energy in the form of ATP, (Adenosine triphosphate).

But this is NOT their only duties, they also control cell signalling, cell death and cellular growth. We now know they have a major role in Ageing.

The ATP can be used for all sorts of biochemical processes from muscle contraction to hormone production.
When mitochondria fail or become dysfunctional, it results in a poor supply of ATP. So cells go slow because they do not have the energy supply to function at normal speed. This means that all bodily functions go slow.

You feel lethargic and drained of Energy.

Children born with mitochondrial disease have debilitating physical and mental disabilities. With many symptoms such as poor growth, loss of muscle coordination, seizures and organ failure.

The current best practice for treatment is to use daily HIT with other clinical support measures. The results speak for themselves.

These children are now thriving despite their disease where previously they didn’t survive.

Some people are put off by High Intensity exercise and I understand. It does take a little time to get use to but the benefits can be felt almost immediately. Usually within the few days!

And even more importantly it can help extend the quality and quantity of your life!!

The secret is to start slowly and build up. Start walking for 15-20 minutes a day and increase the pace for 2 sessions of 1 to 2 minutes or as much as you can sustain the intensity.

I like cycling for about 15mins on a stationary bike. I have 3 sessions of between 30seconds to a minute of intense cycling with a 3 minutes of recovery at a slower pace.

This can seem overwhelming at first and I know its the major reason why many give up.
